Paul Scholes Blasts England Team

In England, National Squads on July 10, 2011 at 10:07 am

Paul Scholes called England’s national team “laughable” and criticized his former teammates for “selfish” behavior.

Scholes made more than 60 appearances with England before retiring from international play to focus on his club career at Manchester United.

Normally quiet during his time with England – never before complaining about having to play on the left side in deference to Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard – Scholes ripped into the national squad:

“I always felt when I first started with England that players – especially players at clubs like your Aston Villas – try to use England as a way to get to a top club. You feel, are they there for the right reason?

“I think they are very selfish people. They are all there to get their bit of glory, their bit of headlines, to think ‘I will get a move from this’. I think that is the biggest problem with English players.”

Scholes considered the notion that England was a serious contender for the World Cup a “laughable” one. He also praised Spain’s national team who “all seem to play for each other.”
